Our planet needs more than words
While companies the world over talk about how important the environment is, we're proud to be doing something about it. Yes, all manufacturers are reducing their CO2 emissions, but a lot of this is down to enforced legislation and taxation incentives across different regions. We like to take things further.
CO2 Emissions and Fuel Consumption Peugeot is the leading European manufacturer in the production of low CO2 emission vehicles, something we've worked hard to achieve - but we aren't resting on our laurels. Our HDi diesel technology in particular is instrumental in reducing CO2 emissions. CO2 emissions are directly proportional to fuel consumption, and since Peugeot HDi cars use around 20-30% less fuel, they emit around 20-30% less CO2 than an equivalent petrol car.

Operation Carbon As well as reducing the CO2 our own vehicles emit (to class-leading standards) we're investing in clearing up the excess carbon in our atmosphere with the Carbon Peugeot Sink. This is an area in the Amazon rainforest we've secured to put into practice theories surrounding the control of growing levels of CO2. Over 2 million trees representing 50 different species have been planted since 1998, which will allow scientists to study the relationship between reforestation, absorption of CO2 and climate control.
Looking Further But, of course, CO2 is not the whole story. Really looking after the environment is about taking a wider view across all our activities. That's why we ensure our vehicles are designed to be recycled right from the drawing board. And, by putting in the effort to ensure each part is identifiable at the end of its life, we're making a sustainable future more realistic. It's through this process, for example, that dead batteries come back as polypropylene mud flaps. At least 90% of all new Peugeots are recyclable. Aerodynamics play a part too, as the more efficient a car's aerodynamics, the less drag it produces. Less drag means less fuel to get the car going. The 308, for example, has a very low coefficient of drag of just 0.29.
Future Developments We're proud of our environmental heritage and strive to improve our performance all the time. We're constantly investing in new, cleaner fuels. Two of the most exciting of Peugeot's alternative energy programs are Hybrid HDi Diesel Technology and the Fuel Cell.
